Nonsmokers Have Rights Too

As a nonsmoker, it always amazes me how smokers continually fight for their rights to smoke wherever they want. I guess they think the cloud of smoke they blow into the sky stays confined to just their surroundings. Or maybe they think that everyone else should smoke and this is their way of enticing us all to do it. Perhaps misery loves company and their feeling is if they are going to get sick and possibly die from smoking then so should we all. Whatever their reasons are, they certainly are selfish in their actions. People choose not to smoke mostly because it is a dirty, smelly, unhealthy habit. I would love it if people all over the world stood up and rallied to ban cigarettes once and for all. Nothing good comes of them (except for the profits made by cigarette and tobacco companies).

When I recently came across an ad for electronic cigarettes, I finally thought this world was moving in the right direction. These e-cigarettes, as they are called, are battery operated and contain no tobacco or tar. Even better than that—there is no smoke. Inside the e-cigarette is a liquid that turns into a vapor once the cigarette is turned on. The vapor is then inhaled. What was particularly interesting about these electronic cigarettes is that the smoker can vary the level of nicotine in the cartridge. This is great for someone who is contemplating quitting the habit. There are even flavors like strawberry, chocolate and mint that can be put into the cigarette to make it taste better.

After seeing this, I cannot imagine why anyone would still smoke traditional cigarettes. Yet, despite all the information that is publicized about the dozens of harmful effects caused by cigarette smoking, people still continue to smoke. Even worse, they still try to shove their right to smoke in everyone’s face—along with their second-hand smoke. Personally, I have just about had it with having to turn my head or move to another location when someone decides to light one up near me. The last time I checked, I had rights too—the right to live and stay healthy.

No one should have to be exposed to anything that is harmful. It is an individual right when deciding to smoke, but it is everyone’s right not to be subjected to it. I am proposing that people who smoke in public be fined like people who are caught driving drunk. After all it is pretty much the same thing—a drunk driver is putting my life at risk while I am on the road just like a smoker does when he or she exposes me to their cigarette smoke. A smoker or drinker cannot be forced into quitting, but they certainly can be forced to pay a price for risking others with their bad habits.
